Astrakhan hosted the International Forum of Women's Entrepreneurship

On 22 October, 2018, the UCLG-Eurasia member, the city of Astrakhan hosted the International Forum of Women's Entrepreneurship “Astrakhan – Azerbaijan”. About four hundred active representatives of business structures from two countries took part in the event to discuss the urgent issues, exchange experience and establish the mutually beneficial cooperation. The opening ceremony of the Forum was attended by Alena Gubanova, Mayor of Astrakhan, Vice-President of UCLG-Eurasia.

The Forum was organized by the Association of Business Women of the Astrakhan region. The community was created in 2016 and has already implemented the several interesting projects. Last year the first Forum was held. This year the event has become an international one. According to Alena Gubanova, this indicates that the role of women in public, economic and political life is increasing.

“Often the initial conditions of men and women are not equal. The women’s initiatives are perceived with a certain degree of skepticism. Moreover, the success in solving complex problems is attributed not to skills and professionalism, but to luck or chance. The metaphor “glass ceiling” clearly reflects the fact that in many organizations there is a boundary for the career growth of women. That is why we constantly have to prove our worth by real actions. That is why the results are often higher than the men’s ones. And we gradually break these stereotypes”, - Alena Gubanova emphasized in her speech.

In the framework of the Forum, Alena Gubanova presented the activities of the World Organization “United Cities and Local Governments” which priorities include the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. For example, there is the UCLG Committee on Gender Equality, which conducts the informational campaigns and the educational activities.

The program of the Forum also included business meetings, exhibitions and workshops in various fields.
