Ilsur Metshin: “UCLG must become a platform for cities to share experience”
On July 15 Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin met with Secretary-General of the European Section of the organization “United Cities and Local Governments” Frederic Vallier. During the meeting that took place at the location of Kazan Sabantuy they discussed the prospects of the organization’s development and options of the most effective usage of the UCLG platform to support cities – members of the organization.
It should be noted that the meeting of Ilsur Metshin with Frederic Vallier was held in the run-up to the elections of the secretary-general of the World Organization that will take place in December. The Secretary-General of the European Section of UCLG is one of the candidates for this position.
As Ilsur Metshin noted when opening the meeting, UCLG must become a family of mayors, a platform where they could share best practices necessary for cities’ development.
Ilsur Metshin referred as an example to the cooperation with Mayor of Paris Ann Hidalgo who was interested in the learning the experience of Kazan from the bid campaigns and victories in it. Kazan shared experience with pleasure and carried out together with Paris fruitful joint work to support France in the bid campaign for the right to hold the Olympic Games 2024. “This is a good example of what an excellent platform for sharing experience UCLG is and how organization can serve as a platform of opportunities”, highlighted I.Metshin.
Just as a hostess cannot cook all dishes equally well so the city cannot be the best in all spheres, noted the Mayor and emphasized that it is important for cities to share as best practices as negative experience so that cities can learn from others’ mistakes.
Participants of the meeting discussed the area in which it is necessary to build the work within the framework of UCLG so that the activity of the organization met the needs of cities which are its members.
Secretary-General of the UCLG-Eurasia Rasikh Sagitov and the First Deputy Head of the Municipal Authority of Kazan Evgeniya Lodvigova also took part in the meeting that was held at the location of the Sabantuy festival.
