On May 23-26 under the invitation of Roland Ries, Mayor of Strasbourg, Co-president of UCLG the delegation of UCLG-Eurasia is taking part in the meetings of the Executive Bureau of the United Cities and Local Governments, which are held in the headquarters of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The meetings are held in the form of high-level political debates with the participation of ministers, governors and mayors under the theme “Inclusive and Safe Cities: Key for Sustainable Development”.
The Eurasian section is represented by Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary-General of UCLG-Eurasia, Alena Gubanova, Mayor of Astrakhan, Galina Skripka, Head of the Department for International and Inter-Municipal Relations of the City of Rostov-on-Don and others.
The UCLG Executive Bureau kicked off with a meeting of the UCLG Secretaries General to revise the work programme of the network as a whole and identify priorities and synergies for action. Further, there was a meeting of the Working Group on Territorial and Management of Crises where members defined the agenda for 2018.
On May 25, members of the UCLG Executive Bureau discussed the current issues of the organization's activities in a closed session. Zinaida Neyarokhina, Vice-President of the UCLG-Eurasia, Chairperson of the City Duma of Rostov-on-Don presented a report on the activities of the section.
During the event an agreement between Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia and Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of the UN-Habitat Program was reached on her visit to Kazan and Cheboksary.
Maimunah Mohd Sharif will visit Kazan on September 5 and meet with Ilsur Metshin, President of UCLG-Eurasia, Mayor of Kazan to discuss issues of further cooperation between UCLG and UN-Habitat. Further, they will proceed to the city of Cheboksary to participate in the Eurasia Local Governments Congress dedicated to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
"We are honored that this year the Congress will be visited by the UN Under-Secretary-General. This event will help to draw great attention to the problems associated with the implementation of the SDGs", Rasikh Sagitov said.
The visit of a high-level guest is an important event for the local authorities of Eurasia and shows the importance of our region for achieving the SDGs and global decision-making process.
