Georgy Ivanov, Vice Mayor of Yakutsk, spoke at the 3rd World Congress of UCLG in Mexico was made by, on the theme «Sustainable Development of Yakutsk in the Permafrost». Along with him, Vitor Lippi, Mayor of Sorocaba (Brazil), Joseph Riley, Mayor of Charleston (USA), Sandrine Salerno, Mayor of Geneva (Switzerland), Yasuhiro Yamazaki, Vice Mayor of Hamamatsu (Japan) spoke on the section «Life in the City».

Georgy Ivanov told about the environmental features of the Far North and about life in extreme climatic conditions.

Yakutsk is one of the oldest cities in Siberia and the Far East, founded in 1632. It is a city with extraordinary cultural and historical heritage, but at the same time a modern city with innovative technologies in many areas of industry and construction. Having such a great experience, it can rightly be considered one of the most promising cities of the North: demographics, the number of centenarians, living standards, health and education.

Despite the extreme climate, Yakutsk was able to create a unique «Northern Civilization» with high demographic rates. The city lives the life of Russian cities. Yakutsk is dynamically constructed and boldly about the future. Business and shopping centers, modern and comfortable accommodation have been built over the past few years. By putting objects on per capita Yakutsk is a leader not only in the Far Eastern federal district but also in Russia as a whole. Yakutsk is a phenomenon that is the only city in the Russian Far East and the Arctic where despite the most severe climatic conditions in the world a significant population growth, the best indicators of socioeconomic development and investment growth are recorded.

Today, Yakutsk is steadily developing city. Its achievements are the basis of new programs and projects that are already being successfully implemented. Mr Ivanov’s speech moved to the depths of listeners’ and speakers’ soul; generated enormous interest among the public and a storm of applause. He gladly answered all questions asked him, and after the speech delegates from many countries long time came to him to personally acquaint and speak on various topics.
