The official opening ceremony of the Eurasia Local Governments Congress took place in the city of Cheboksary. The moderator of the ceremony was the Mayor of the city Evgeniy Kadyshev.
The head of the Chuvash Republic Mikhail Ignatiev was first to welcome the Congress participants. According to him, the Eurasia Local Governments Congress is a unique platform to share experience and best practices between the mayors of the cities.
Among the honorable guests of the ceremony was the President of the World Organization “United Cities and Local Governments” Mpho Parks Tau. In his speech he expressed gratitude to Evgeniy Kadyshev for hospitality in the capital of the Chuvash Republic and noted that local governments achieved great success in localizing the Sustainable Development Goals and are integrating the Goals in the urban development strategy.
Further, President of Eurasian section of UCLG, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin delivered a welcoming address: “Cheboksary is not only a dynamically developing city of the Volga region, but also one of the important members of UCLG-Eurasia. The capital of the Chuvash Republic was one of the first cities who supported the idea of UCLG establishment in 2004. On behalf of the leadership of the Eurasian section, I thank the authorities of the city for the commitment to the work of the organization for many years. Active work in Eurasian section is a significant contribution of the city of Cheboksary to the strengthening of Eurasian cooperation”.
Under-Secretary General of the United Nations, Executive Director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif sent a video message to the Congress participants. In her message she highlighted that UCLG had been a key partner of UN-Habitat for many years and called upon the participants to integrate the SDGs in their cities.
The Congress will be followed by the plenary session “Towards Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals”.
