Guangzhou Municipality (China) invites cities around the world to participate in the 7th Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award). Participation in the Award will allow to share innovative governance solutions, and contribute wisdom and strength to building an open, inclusive, and sustainable community with a shared future for humankind.
A call for applications is open from September 29, 2025. If an application is submitted by March 31, 2026, applicants will be able to receive expert comments. April 30, 2026, is the deadline for submitting applications. You can apply for participation by following the link: https://www.guangzhouaward.org/es/es-web/home.
Participating cities will have the opportunity to:
- win 20,000 $, a trophy, and a commemorative certificate;
- showcase initiatives at international conferences and exhibitions;
- exchange experiences and learn from global urban innovation practices.
The Guangzhou Award is open to all cities and local governments worldwide, including members of UCLG, Metropolis, and ICLEI, as well as other cities and local governments. Ongoing or recently completed initiatives are eligible, including those carried out in collaboration with private sector and civil society partners.
Thematic areas include (but not limited to):
- social inclusion and shared prosperity;
- environmental protection and resilience;
- public services and infrastructure;
- urban heritage and cultural preservation;
- smart cities and technology governance.
The Award ceremony will take place in November 2026 in Guangzhou as part of the Global Mayors’ Forum.
Note: the Guangzhou Award is an important platform for sharing best practices in urban governance and promoting global sustainable development programs. It was established in 2012 jointly by the city of Guangzhou, UCLG, and Metropolis. The purpose of the Award is to promote sustainable urban development and international cooperation by recognizing and disseminating innovative practices in the field of urban governance. To date, six awards have been organized, in which more than 1,600 initiatives around the world have participated.
