Moscow Reduces Harmful Emissions

Москва сокращает вредные выбросы в атмосферу

In recent years, the number of cars in Moscow has increased to 4.7 million, but at the same time the amount of emissions into the atmosphere has declined. In 2018, carbon monoxide emissions were halved, nitric oxide went down by 2.3 times, sulfur dioxide — 1.7 times and suspended particles — 1.7 times. This was achieved through the integrated work. In particular, due to the restriction of entry into the capital of freight transport, the purchase by the city of buses of a higher ecological class, trolley buses and trams. In the next three years, it is planned to increase the fleet of electric buses to 900 units.

The contribution of industrial enterprises to pollution of the atmosphere decreased by 11.8%. This happened due to the tightening of federal legislation and the requirements of the mandatory installation of automatic emission control systems.

Today, Moscow faces the challenge of creating an infrastructure for separate waste collection. The city annually produces about 8 million tons of garbage. Only a small part is processed – about 2 million tons. At the moment there are more than 1.5 thousand separate collection points. In the near future 3 thousand more will be added. The authorities will have to develop incentives for the citizens to consciously handle waste. Together with the residents of the capital, there will be a discussion on the construction of waste sorting and recycling plants.
