Ilsur Metshin, Mayor of Kazan and President of UCLG-Eurasia took part in 8th UNWTO Global Summit on Urban Tourism “Smart Cities, Smart Destinations” among delegates from 80 countries. The event was held on October 9-12, 2019 in the city of Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan. One of the central events of the summit was a round table under the theme “Smart Cities and Tourism”, where the mayor of Kazan gave a speech.

The round table gathered Altai Kulginov, Mayor of Nur-Sultan, the Minister of Public Works and Housing of Indonesia, the mayors of Ankara, Islamabad, Samarkand, Tallinn and others. The mayor of Kazan told the delegates of the summit about the development of tourism in the city and emphasized the role of major international events that help generate a tourist flow.

“Today, the city of Kazan has an official brand “the third capital of Russia” as well as the “sports capital of Russia”, said Ilsur Metshin. “Major international events have become a driver for the development of the entire urban infrastructure, and the Kazan sports calendar is scheduled for many coming years”.

The level of urban infrastructure affects the flow of tourists. The mayor said that in the recent years, the railway stations, the airport, and the road network have been modernized in Kazan and emphasized that all the transformations have been based on the high-tech solutions.

An important part of creating an atmosphere of hospitality was the installation of pedestrian tourist navigation in the city in three languages and the placement of QR-codes nearby the main attractions of Kazan. These codes allow to download and listen to information about the object in English, Spanish, Chinese, Tatar and Russian.

As part of the business program, Ilsur Metshin had a meeting with Askar Mamin, Prime-Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Mayor and the Prime-Minister discussed cooperation in various areas of socio-economic development and outlined the prospects for the further joint work. Ilsur Metshin thanked Askar Mamin for hospitality and noted the high organizational level of the holding events.

On October 9-12, 2019, 8th UNWTO Urban Tourism Summit “Smart Cities, Smart Destinations” took place in Nur-Sultan. The summit program included seminars, panel discussions on smart tourism destinations and other events with the participation of mayors of 15 major cities, foreign entrepreneurs, architects, journalists and representatives of state and tourist organizations from 80 countries.
