Towards Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals

Within the framework of the Eurasia Local Governments Congress the plenary session “Towards Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals” took place. Participants of the session, representatives of international organizations, regions and leading experts, shared their achievements in localizing the SDGs and discussed which aspects prevent their integration.

Ekaterina Perfilieva, Chief Editor of the Open School of the Sustainable Development, told about interaction with population and promotion of citizens to the SDGs achievement. Ekaterina considers that it is necessary to engage the youth into awareness-raising of the Goals. This is the activity that the staff of the Open School is carrying out. Yana Poliakova, expert of the Center for Fiscal Policy, considers the engagement of local governments the most important factor regarding the SDGs implementation. She shared her research conducted within the territory of Eurasian region with participants.

The cultural aspect became the central theme of the report of Evgeniy Kadyshev, Mayor of Cheboksary. According to him, culture is the basis of cities’ sustainable development necessary for successful implementation of all SDGs. Dr.Haik Nikogosian, Senior Adviser of the European Network of the World Health Organization “Healthy Cities”, decided to make the focus on the SDG 3 “Good Health and Well-Being” and shared achievements in this field.

Gavril Kirillin, Acting Minister of External Relations and Ethnic Affairs, using the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic as an example told about the role of regional governments in shaping the New Urban Agenda. Mpho Parks Tau, President of UCLG, told how the World Organization “United Cities and Local Governments” promotes the SDGs and global agendas’ implementation.
